What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are syringes containing a gel-like substance called hyaluronic acid. These are widely used to restore structure and volume to areas prone to ageing in order to achieve a more youthful appearance.
Hyaluronic acid attracts water molecules to the surrounding skin tissues, instantly restoring the natural firmness of the skin – whilst smoothing out both fine lines and deeper wrinkles.
The properties of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers will vary according to the area be treated.
What brands of Dermal Fillers are available?
Popular and well-established brands of dermal fillers available include Teosyal®, Juvederm®, Restylane® and Princess®. All fillers essentially contain the same key-ingredient but vary slightly in the chemical properties, feel, aesthetic-effect and tissue integration ability.
What can I use Dermal Fillers for?
Fillers can be used effectively for lip augmentation, cheek augmentation and jawline contouring.
Lip fillers can be used to both volumise and define the lips. In a typical lip augmentation, lip injections are used to centrally enhance lip volume in a series of techniques mastered by Dr Shaan.
After subtly enhancing volume, definition can be achieved in the lip border (vermillion), cupid's bow and philtrum.
The procedure may be further enhanced by supporting and lifting down-turned corners of the mouth.
All lip injections performed by Dr Shaan in clinic aim to create a natural and subtle lip in accordance with your own beauty ideal's.
Cheek Fillers (Contouring vs. Volume)
Cheek fillers, also known as cheek augmentation or contouring use dermal fillers and a variety of techniques in order to beautifully enhance the natural contour or the cheek by accentuating the cheekbone and mid-face.
The lifting action caused by the remodelling of the cheekbones also relieves pressure and softens any nose-to-mouth lines (nasolabial folds).
If there is moderate to severe volume loss, cheek fillers can also be used to create and restore volume.
Some Asian-cultures prefer a more rounded cheek or 'apple-cheek' effect. This can be easily be achieved by Dr Shaan in the clinic.
Safety is paramount when treating the mid-face and cheek area, we use both cannula and needle techniques when treating the mid-face.
Nasolabial folds / Marionette lines
Nasolabial folds (nose-to-mouth lines) are often filled to soften deep lines when they cannot be relieved by cheek filler.
Dermal filler in this region is always deposited by Dr Shaan using a cannula technique for safety.
Marionette lines are the lines extending from the mouth corners to the chin. Marionettes can often be combined with botox in this area to achieve a gold-standard result.

How long will Dermal Fillers last?
There is no simple answer to this as it depends on the area being treated, product and personal factors relating to the client such as metabolism, genetics and other lifestyle factors. Typically, dermal fillers should last anywhere between 6-12 months although in some this is considerably longer.
Do Dermal Fillers hurt?
No procedure in aesthetic medicine is completely pain-free. We always use topical anaesthetic cream, and can also use anaesthetic containing fillers to ensure your experience is as smooth as possible.
What do I do before the procedure?
Try to avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24h prior as this can slightly increase the risk or bruising and bleeding. Try to avoid medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen unless medically prescribed for a specific reason.
Can I go to work after?
Again, healing time and post-procedure swelling (if any) is completely dependent on the client. Typically, lip injections tend to swell and bruise more than cheeks and nasolabial folds - which often have very minimal swelling. That said, some people do not swell or bruise at all!
We provide a small amount of Arnica cream after all Dermal Filler procedures, to help heal and soothe any redness, bruises and/or swelling.
