Hyperhidrosis Treatments

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term commonly used to describe excessive sweating.

Hyperhidrosis affects both men and women equally and is most common in the 18-39 age range.

Primary hyperhidrosis (excess sweating not caused by a medical condition or medication) can be effectively treated with botulinum toxins such as Botox ®.

Other causes of excessive sweating (secondary hyperhidrosis), can be medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism or diabetes mellitus.

Although not life-threatening, excessive sweating can cause considerable psychological impact and be highly uncomfortable, whilst leading to further skin irritation.

Botox ® injections block the nerves that trigger sweat glands and can be safely administered in the under-arms and hands.

These treatments can be life-changing for people adversely affected by hyperhidrosis. The effects can last from anywhere between 4 and 12 months, dependent on the individual.

All treatments include a 6-8 week follow-up to assesses treatment outcomes.

Why is this treatment more expensive?

The treatment uses many more units of botulinum toxin than conventional anti-wrinkle procedures. Nevertheless, due to the mechanism of action, the effects usually last longer in duration.

What does this treatment involve?

Depending on the area to be treated, multiple injections sites are marked and small 'blebs' of the product are injected beneath the skin. The product will slowly diffuse into the area over time and the effect may take up to 5 days to be noticeable. Studies have shown that Botox can successfully treat sweaty palms in 80-90% cases.
